This model of bus was first delivered by New Flyer Industries and put into operation by the HSR in 1996. A total of twenty five coaches were ordered. A second order of 10 of these coaches were ordered in 1998 with another fifteen in 2002. A final twenty were ordered in 2003.
The main visable difference between this model and sister models D40LF and DE41LF is the fuel method. The C40LF is powered by ("CNG") Compressed Natural Gas with the natural gas canisters stored on the roof.
In addition, the coaches in first two orders and the final two orders were virtually identical, save for the difference in the route sign. The 1996 and 1998 models have a green sign, illuminated by an outside light. The 2002 and 2003 models feature a bright orange LED sign.
