Q: How many active routes are there in the HSR? |
A: There are 32 active routes in the HSR. 28 of the routes run year-round, with 4 seasonal routes. '9 Rock Gardens' runs from May to November, '51 University' runs September to April, '56 Confederation Park' runs June to September and '99 Waterfront Shuttle' runs from June to October.

Q: Are there any unlisted shuttle routes? |
A: There are 3 shuttle routes in service by the HSR.
The first shuttle is the 'Redeemer University College Shuttle' that travels from the Glancaster Loop to the Meadowlands Power Centre in Ancaster.
The second shuttle is the 'Mohawk Road East Extra Shuttle' which runs from Limeridge Mall and the Mountain Brow Loop.
The third shuttle is the 'Tiger-Cat Express.' It provides free service to ticketholders of that day's Hamilton's Tiger-Cats game and runs just before and after the game. The shuttle runs from the University Plaza, King & Hughson, LimeRidge Mall and Eastgate Square to and from Ivor Wynn Stadium.

Q: Which route has the best frequency? |
A: The frequency of 'Route 1 King' peaks during weekdays at one bus every 7 minutes. 'Route 2 Barton' comes in a close second with a frequency of 8 minutes during its peak.
|
|
Q: Which route has the worst frequency? |
A: Four different routes share the worst (weekday) frequency of one bus an hour. 'Route 3 Cannon' runs hourly after 7pm on weekdays, 'Route 8 York' runs hourly after 6pm as well. 'Route 11 Parkdale' drops to a frequency of once per hour after 7pm, and finally the frequency of 'Route 33 Sanatorium' drops to once an hour after 9pm.
One could argue that 'Route 9 Rock Gardens' has the worst frequency of all, running only on an hourly frequency between 10am and 6pm. In addition the route only operates on Sundays and holidays. As such there are only a total of nine round-trips a week on this route. This route is not considered however as it is a seasonal route and only runs during summer months.

Q: Why have some routes disappeared? |
A: There are several reasons that a route may be discontinued:
The first reason is decline in ridership. If a route sees a drop in ridership it can become costly and fruitless to maintain the route. At that point the frequency can be reduced to limit the number of coaches needed to maintain the route. An example of this can be seen with 'Route 15 Sherman/Ottawa.' The route went from having full service, to having limited 'A.M. peak period' service only, to then being discontinued entirely.
Alternatively, smaller routes may become discontinued and another route is expanded to take over the service area. Combining two smaller routes, that share a common end point, reduces the number of coaches and manpower needed to maintain the routes, while maintaining the same level of service in the area. An example of this is 'Route 57 Nash.' The route's northern loop point was shared by the southern loop point of 'Route 4 Bayfront.' The Nash route was discontinued and Bayfront extended to cover the area. No service area was lost in the transition.
Another reason for a route being discontinued is due to route duplication, where multiple routes cover the same service area. An example of this is the former 'Route 32 Garth.' Every inch of the service area of this route was also covered by another route. The 27A, 31, 33, 34 and 45 all ran on Garth street.
The final reason for a route being discontinued is due to change in city geography. Perhaps the best example of this is the cancellation of 'Route 45 Limeridge.' When the city began construction of the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway, Limeridge Road had to be permanently closed in three places. With the road virtually becoming a side street it became impossible to run the route.
